MHS girls defeat Council Grove

Staff writer

The Marion High School girls basketball team defeated Council Grove, 67-33, Monday at Council Grove.

Julia Zeiner scored 25 points on her birthday and added five rebounds and four assists.

Lindsay Hett scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds, recorded five assists, and had four steals.

Bridget Lundy had her best scoring night of the season with 10 points.

The Warriors will play their first-round game of the sub state tournament Tuesday at Marion, but the time and opponent for the game have yet to be determined.

Hillsboro

The Lady Warriors lost to Hillsboro Thursday at Marion, 55-47.

Zeiner matched her frontcourt counterpart from Hillsboro, Dakota Kaufman, shot for shot; Zeiner scored 19 points to lead all scorers, and Kaufman had 18 points to lead the Trojans. The points were part of an all-around effort for Zeiner who also nabbed eight rebounds and four assists.

With Kaufman in foul trouble and sitting on the bench much of the second half, Hillsboro guard Allie Faul was the difference maker. Faul hit two 3-pointers in the second half to secure a tight Hillsboro lead. She was also nearly perfect from the charity stripe, hitting 6-of-7 free throws to score 14 points.

Lindsay Hett did everything within her power to will the Warriors to victory. After starting the fourth quarter with only 4 points, Hett scored 10 in the final period; and, in what has become her forte, Hett made a sensational defensive play to keep Marion in the game.

The Warriors turned the ball over a mere 10 feet from their own basket. The Hillsboro recipient tried to go in for the layup only to have her shot blocked from behind by Hett.

Hett then grabbed the ball and hit both free throws to bring the Warrior advantage to just 46-43.

On the ensuing Hillsboro inbounds play, the Trojans threw an errant pass out of bounds at midcourt. The Warriors were unable to take advantage of this opportunity, turning over the ball on a lob to the post. The Warriors would trail from a two-possession position for the rest of the game.

Marion Head Coach Randy Savage was proud of the way his team played under the circumstances. The Warriors played the majority of the fourth quarter down two starters: Kayley Heerey sat the game out with a high ankle sprain suffered against Nickerson and Bridget Lundy fouled out.

Savage was also impressed with the Marion support at the game.

ā€œIā€™d play Hillsboro every night with that type of crowd,ā€ he said.
