MHS golfers take 7th

Marion High School and Peabody-Burns golfers took seventh of 10 teams with a team score of 426 strokes Tuesday at Herington.

“With such a young team, I am not the least bit unhappy with the way we finished,” coach Jim Pohlman said. “Many of the guys have never played varsity golf before.”

Austin Molleker had the lowest score at 112 strokes, Jade Corona shot a 115, Zach Stephey made 117, Jacob Matz scored 119, and Brent Buller finished with 125 strokes.

As a team, the Warriors finished 99 strokes behind Halstead, who took first place with 362 strokes, but was only 40 strokes behind Hillsboro, who placed 5th with 423 strokes.

Pohlman said the course’s lack of irrigated greens, plentiful tall grass, and water hazards accounted for some of his players’ lost strokes. However, the meet provided them a preview of the regional meet that will also be played in Herington in May.
