MHS Gordon records double double in 47-32 loss

Rest of Warriors struggle

Staff writer

Marion High School 6-foot-2 junior forward Whitney Gordon was set for a different role this season.

Against Hutchinson Trinity Friday, she scored 19 points; 15 points were scored on 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. She only went to the free-throw line once after being fouled on a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.

“If she was a secret before, it’s out now,” coach Randy Savage said. “What I like more is she thought we needed to get inside more.”

The next highest scoring Warrior was Sarah Guetersloh with 4 points. The Warriors shot 21.7 percent from the field for the game, losing to Trinity, 47-32.

The Celtics played 2-3 and 1-2-2 zone against Marion and the Warriors opted to shoot 3-pointers on half of their possessions. Trinity’s strategy was sound; Marion went 6-for-23 from beyond the arc. The only other Warrior besides Gordon to hit a 3-pointer was Katey Ehrlich in the first half.

The Warriors held the Celtics to 37.5 percent shooting, but two Trinity players reached double figures. Guard Lizzie Degner scored 17 points. Senior Emily Hett was in charge of checking Degner in the first half and played disruptive defense, however foul trouble — Hett committed her three fouls in the first half — forced Hett to cover another Celtic player.

“I think Emily had a nice game,” Savage said. “We need her and Erin Meierhoff to score a little more.”

Aiding the defense, Gordon seized 10 defensive rebounds; she had 11 rebounds for the game.

Most of the Warriors were hindered with foul trouble throughout the contest. Ehrlich had three fouls in the first half and picked up her fourth foul in the third quarter. Donna Cady and Gordon also committed four fouls.

Gordon was in the best shape of any of the Warriors with one foul in the first half. She picked up three fouls in a flurry in the third quarter — she committed an over-the-back foul, Rachel Vieyra drove into the Marion shot blocker to pick up a shooting foul, and Gordon was charged with a loose-ball foul after a dive.

With Gordon trying not to pick up her fifth foul, the Celtics attacked the rim. They were led by Vieyra who picked up the majority of her 11 points in the second half.

“We want them to play aggressive,” Savage said of the defense. “The effort was great; we just have to learn to play a little smarter, not pick up silly fouls.”

Savage pointed out that many of the young Warriors played more minutes Friday than in any game in their careers. He said Meierhoff may not have played 22 minutes all year during her freshman season; she started and played nearly 23 minutes Friday. Freshman Ehrlich played over 16 minutes and fellow freshman Megan Richmond played 9 minutes.

“That’s a lot of minutes from freshmen. They need reps,” Savage said. “The next three weeks we’re going to work on playing vanilla offense and vanilla defense.”
