MHS, MMS scholars' bowl teams compete during week

Marion High School varsity scholars’ bowl team of seniors Matt Thierolf and Seth Banning, sophomores Dane Purkeypile and E.J. Obermeyer, and freshman Beth Nesser posted a 6-1 record Thursday at Moundridge to bring home third place out of 18 teams.

In the preliminary round-robin matches Marion defeated Halstead 70-60, Bye 80-0, Inman 90-60, Moundridge 80-35, and Ell-Saline 90-10, before losing to Hillsboro 60-50 in the semifinal match.

In the consolation match the Warriors defeated Hesston 100-30.

Thierolf was top-scorer with 280 points, followed by Purkeypile with 160, and Banning and Obermeyer with 60 points each.

Thierolf, juniors Sam Ehrlich and Colton Olson, and sophomore Derek Stuchlik posted a 5-1 record Monday at the Flinthills High School Invitational.

The team was eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing to Bluestem 40-30 on a tie-breaker question.

Thierolf again led the scoring with 170 points, followed by Stuchlik with 80, Ehrlich 40, and Olson with 10.

The Hesston Invitational Dec. 2 will be the next varsity outing.

Marion Middle School

The Marion Middle School Scholars’ bowl season began well Nov. 11 at the MCAA quad at Marion.

The seventh grade team of Alicia Maloney, Caitlyn Maloney, Nick Meyer, Tim Knolla, and Zach Robson took second place in the seventh grade division.

They posted a 2-1 record in the preliminary round, won their semifinal match-up, and went on to win one from Lindsborg in the best-of-three finals.

Robson led the scoring with 140 points followed closely by Meyer with 110.

Caitlyn and Alicia Maloney added 45 and 35, respectively.

The eighth grade team of Angel Funk, Elizabeth Goentzel, Isaac Baldwin, Monica Spachek, Jenevieve Corona, and Josh Brown also took second place.

They posted a 2-1 record in preliminary pool play and won their semifinal match-up.

The eighth graders lost the first two matches of the best-of-three final against Hesston.

Spachek led scoring with 170 points, followed by Baldwin with 100, Funk with 65, Brown with 50, Goentzel with 20, and Corona with 10.

The Wildcat scholars won’t compete again until after winter break.
