MHS students commit to serving community

Staff writer

Students from Marion High School worked on several community service projects Thursday. The service day has become a tradition before Old-Settlers day when thousands of people descend upon the town.

Teachers randomly assigned individuals and to the various service projects, which were split between morning and afternoon. Some students participated in painting projects throughout town.

Korey Linder and Corey Shields re-painted the yellow curbs along Main Street. Others painted the Marion Elementary School playground equipment.

Some high schoolers were assigned cleanup duty. A group of students picked up trash around Marion County Lake and another cleaned up the stadium.

Kisha Hammond, Taylor Harms, and Chassidy Carlson cleared away brush from the spring area in Central Park. In addition, weeds were pulled in several other spots around town.

In the afternoon, students went around town and washed windows of local businesses.

Marshall Ragland and Matt Sprowls constructed picnic tables, while other students were more destructive; they were given the task of demolishing concrete.

Whatever the students were assigned to do, they could all agree that what they were doing benefited local residents.

“You know, just get stuff done,” Ragland said. “Help out the community.”
