MHS takes first at Centre

For the first time in Coach Jim Versch’s coaching career, Marion High School volleyball team swept a tournament, winning all games and matches.

For the second year in a row, the Warriors walked away with the championship at the Centre varsity tournament Saturday.

The netters played tough ball, defeating every team in pool play — Tescott, 25-6, 25-15; White City, 25-14, 25-10; and Little River, 25-13, 25-16.

In the semifinals, MHS defeated Herington, 25-21 and 25-9.

MHS played Little River for the championship and defeated them, 25-19 and 25-21.

“I was thrilled. I really felt our team was in total control throughout the day,” Coach Jim Versch said. “Even in the games where the competition was not the best, the Warriors really played together and played our kind of volleyball.”

Lindsay Hett, Whitney Gordon, and Julia Zeiner were chosen for the all-tournament team.

“I thought Kayley Heerey should have been on the all-tournament team,” Versch said. “She had some great blocks and hits.”

In league play, the Warriors have yet to win. The team’s overall record is 3-4.

The Lady Warriors play in the Hoisington Quad Tournament Tuesday.

MHS will host a varsity tournament Saturday.
