A group of five people from Marion Presbyterian Church will work on house construction May 26 to June 2 in Haiti.

Pastor Jeremiah Lange said a second group of five could go if there is enough interest in the community. There are a couple of church members who are on the fence about going, he said. They probably could be persuaded to go if a full group can be put together.

Lange, Mike Moran, Bill Darrow, and Brad and Jeannie Wildin have already committed to the mission trip.

The group is working with Haiti Outreach Worldwide to build concrete-block houses in the Port-au-Prince area of Haiti, which was struck by a powerful earthquake in January 2010.

Groups of five people work on single-family homes, which are built in three stages, Lange said. The stages are the concrete foundation, the concrete-block walls, and the timber and tin roof. Mission groups work on one stage, with Haitian nationals hired to complete the other work.

“It’s kind of a win-win situation,” Lange said.

Cost is the biggest obstacle for the trip, he said. Each team of five pays $5,000 for construction of the house and is responsible for the cost of their flights and daily expenses. He said the total cost is approximately $10,000 per group.

The group is planning fundraisers with hopes of raising $15,000. There will be an informational and fundraiser planning meeting at 5:50 p.m. Sunday at Marion Presbyterian Church.
