A proposal merger of Cooperative Grain and Supply with Mid-Kansas Cooperative fell short Nov. 22 when CG&S members failed to muster the necessary votes for approval.

A two-thirds majority vote was required for the resolution to pass, and with 268 members in attendance, the resolution failed with the vote split 136 in favor of and 129 against the merger.

CG&S held three public informational meetings for members regarding the merger and what it entailed. The first meeting on Nov. 11 in Canton drew approximately 40 attendees, the second on Nov. 15 in Marion drew 70, and the third on Nov. 17 in Hillsboro drew 90.

CG&S board approved the proposed merger in October. It would have added five CG&S locations to MKC’s 36 grain facilities, which include elevators in Florence, Peabody, and Burns.

Co-op board member Kevin Suderman said that the decision is what it is.

“It is over and done with and we will move forward,” Suderman said.

Co-op manager Lyman Adams Jr. said that though the merger did not pass, they were appreciative of the members that showed up to vote.

“The board was disappointed in the decision, but we didn’t get the two-thirds vote,” Adams said.
