Nine Warriors named all-league

Mid-Central Activities Association post-season teams for 2008 were filled with Marion High School fall athletes.

Seven football players and two volleyball athletes found themselves on all-league teams.

Volleyball juniors Julia Zeiner and Lindsay Hett earned awards after the team’s 13-21 season.

Zeiner, an outside hitter, led the Warriors in kills (261), attack percentage (.300), aces (66), and digs (202).

The 12 coaches voted her as one of eight players on the first-team.

Hett was one of 14 chosen for the MCAA honorable mention team.

The junior, who split time between setter and hitter, led the team with 257 assists and 14 assisted blocks.

She also contributed 101 kills, 35 aces, 123 digs, and a .251 hitting percentage.

The Warriors football team had seven players named to eight positions on all-league teams.

For the first time, the league was considered one 12-team league. In the past there were teams for the separate, six-team divisions within the league.

Marion still had three players named to the first-teams.

Senior linebacker Matt Thierolf was the only Warrior on the offensive team after being chosen as an offensive lineman.

Brothers Nick and Brad Klenda found themselves on the MCAA defensive first-team after successful junior seasons.

Brad, a senior linebacker, led the team in solo tackles with 44, and assisted on 23.

He also had two fumble recoveries and two sacks.

Defensive lineman Nick Klenda tied Eric Vogel with a team-high eight sacks, and had 50 total tackles.

Nick ended up on the offensive second-team as a tight end.

An intense blocker, Klenda also had three catches for 59 yards during the season.

Junior Sheldon Boone and senior Mitchell Leppke were the final two Warriors on the second teams.

Boone, who was one of four Warriors who regularly carried the ball each game, led the team with 823 yards and seven touchdowns.

Leppke, who also was the team’s quarterback, had 17 tackles, one fumble recovery, and one interception.

Parker Ash was one of two Warriors on the honorable mention offensive team.

The junior was named after his second full year as an offensive lineman.

Senior Luke Gordon was the final Warrior named on the honorable mention team for his punting duties.

Gordon, who also caught 11 passes for 161 yards and two scores during the season, punted 28 times for an average of 30.1 yards with a long of 54 yards.

The Warriors finished 6-3 on the season.
