Old Settlers' Day to highlight frontier death

Marion Kiwanis Club revealed the theme for 2014 Old Settlers’ Day on Tuesday: “The Last Ride of Ed Miller.”

Casey Case spoke about Miller, who was believed to be the only settler in Marion County to have been killed by Native Americans.

Case’s great-great-grandfather, Rosse B. Case, researched Miller in the 1930s. He wrote in a 1935 letter to someone inquiring that he had conclusive evidence Miller died on July 20, 1864. Miller, about 18 years old, had been sent to fetch someone’s relative for a visit.

The place he was buried later became Fairview Cemetery east of Canton.
