Marion Mayor Mary Olson released a statement Tuesday through her attorney, Tim Hodge, regarding an investigation stemming from accusations she “maliciously circulated false rumors concerning financial status.”

“I am writing as the attorney for the re-elected mayor of Marion, Mary Olson. On the eve of the election, April 5, my client and I met with an agent of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation in an effort to answer and respond to any allegation of wrongdoing on my client’s part. My client answered every question honestly and effectively.

“By the end of the interview, we remained confident that no wrongdoing took place on the part of the mayor.”

Hodge and Olson asked the agent if the case could be ended prior to the election.

“However, the KBI agent could conclude the investigation, it was not his decision whether to file charges,” Hodge continued. “Once an allegation is made, the process takes more time to work to an ultimate resolution.”

The allegation arose about four weeks ago and the KBI agent will make a report to the attorney general’s office. The attorney general then will make a decision as to whether charges will be filed.

“I remain confident that the investigation will show no wrong-doing on the mayor’s part,” Hodge said. “She looks forward to helping the city of Marion and will govern in a style that is above-board and open to any scrutiny.”

The investigation was a result of Olson being accused March 12 in a special meeting of Marion City Council.

She was re-elected to the office of mayor in the April 6 election.
