The Marion County Record won seven first-place awards in the 2012 Kansas Press Association Awards of Excellence, presented Saturday at the Kansas Press Association Convention in Overland Park.

In the medium-size non-daily division, the Record won first place in the categories of classified display advertisement, editorial writing, education story, feature photo, government/political story, political advertisement, and youth story.

The newspaper also received a second-place award for photo package and a third-place award for government/political story. Meanwhile, Janet Post of the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin placed second in the small-size non-daily division for feature photo.

The Record’s first-place feature photo was a picture of a diving bald eagle, submitted by Marion County Park and Lake Superintendent Steve Hudson in January 2011. Hudson said he would need to get the photo framed to put beneath the plaque he received for the award.
