Paula Fike

Paula Elizabeth (Mueller) Fike, Ramona, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Medicalodges in Herington, Kansas. She was a homemaker and retired postmaster at Ramona, Kansas.

She was born on Easter Sunday, April 5, 1931, at the family farm north of Tampa, Kansas, the eighth of 10 children of Henry Frederich Karl (HFK) and Mathilde Elise (nee Bielefeld) Mueller. She was baptized at and attended parochial school at St. John’s Lutheran, North Tampa, through fifth grade. Paula also was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1945 at St. John’s. She finished elementary school in Tampa and graduated with the Tampa High School class of 1949. She was active in school, playing trombone in the high school band, and was a cheerleader.

She met her future husband, Warren Fike, of Ramona, at a Fourth of July picnic in Hope, Kansas. They were married on Dec. 28, 1949, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tampa. To this union were born seven children: Linda Diane, Sandra Ann, Carla Jean, Glenda Sue, Gary Dean, Dennis Dale, and Sara Jane. They began their married life together on a couple of rented farm homes around Ramona until Warren’s father passed away in April 1954. They moved into the family farm home later that year and remained there until health became a concern, and Paula moved into Medicalodges in Herington in Jan. 2015.

Paula was active in her church and community. She was a member of the County Liners Extension Homemaker’s Unit from the early 1950s until it disbanded in the late 1990s. She served as a foods project leader and a community club leader for the Ramona Red Chiefs 4-H Club for several years and was involved in its founding. She served her Lord as a Sunday school teacher and catechism teacher at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ramona, and attended many different Bible study groups. Her faith was strong and never wavered.

Her greatest earthly joy centered on her family. She was a tireless and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. At home, she often helped Warren with field work and chores. She loved and provided well for her large family, washing, cleaning, and cooking without complaint. She prepared innumerable family dinners for her extended family and loved entertaining them at holidays, birthdays, and other celebrations.

She is survived by Warren, of the home; daughters Linda (Dan) Peterson of Burdick, Sandra (Steve) Deines of Pierce City, Missouri, Carla (Stacey) Collett of Marion, Glenda (Mike) Jirak of Glade, and Sara (Shane Hack) Eells of Berryton; two sons, Gary (Karol) of Westmoreland, and Dennis (LouAnn) of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a sister, Doris (Richard) Ott of Golden, Missouri; 18 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter Shelby Linahan; a stillborn brother; six brothers, Arnold, Erich, Werner (“Bing”), Lloyd (“Butch”), Arthur, and Lawrence; and two sisters, Alice Winter and Agnes Steinert.

Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2015, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ramona with Reverend Clark Davis officiating. The family received friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Her final resting place will be in the Lewis Cemetery, Ramona.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church, Hospice of Dickinson County, or to the Alzheimer’s Association and may be sent in care of the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, 106 N. Second, Hope, Kansas 67451.
