PEABODY:   PBHS boys optimistic despite inexperience

News editor

If one were to choose a theme song for the Peabody-Burns boys basketball team this season, the play “The King and I” offers a good choice: “Getting to Know You.”

On a senior-laden squad, only returning senior starters Braxton Kyle and Vince Newman bring strong varsity experience to the mix. Nick Preheim, Kaden Gibson, and Junior Edmonson have experience but haven’t played significant varsity minutes, nor have teammates played as a cohesive unit.

They’ll have to learn to play together, and they’ll have to do it with a first-time head coach, Caleb Good, who steps in after six years as an assistant coach.

Hoping to improve on last season’s 6-15 record, Good is aware patience will be necessary as players and staff learn to work together.

“With many new faces to see significant varsity minutes and the new coaching staff and system, it will take some time to get everyone on the same page,” Good said.

Discipline and fundamentals will provide the foundation for building skills and chemistry, Good said.

“Once we are able to get the philosophies and team chemistry down, we feel like we have an extremely high ceiling,” he said. “Our goal is to pursue the desire to get better every day and to grow tight as a family. We are excited about the possibilities for the season.”

Peabody-Burns will open on the road Dec. 5 against Chase County in Cottonwood Falls.
