Faced with questions Monday regarding the 8-mile stretch of Remington Rd. between U.S. 56 and Pilsen, county commissioners expounded their best solution to improve the road.
Warren Kreutziger, representing Veterans of Foreign Wars, expressed concerns of access to the Emil Kapaun memorial.
“Money’s a problem and everything, but he’s the only Medal of Honor recipient in the county,” Kreutziger said.
The road runs north and south, by which wind keeps more dust on the road, resulting in low-visibility conditions, especially to those unfamiliar with the area.
Commissioner Dan Holub mentioned that the commission wanted to put asphalt on the road, but the cost would be too steep, so they chose to do a double chip seal.
At $55,000 per mile, along with plans to single chip seal a mile of road from Pilsen to 290th St., fixing the road will cost $467,500, not including painting and striping.
“It’s a needed cause, but we’re going to have to start digging and saving pennies, even borrowing some,” commission chairman Randy Dallke said.
In other business:
- The commissioners formally welcomed new Emergency Manager Randy Frank to the county during his first day on the job. Frank will present an update to the commission in six weeks, then at six months.
- Commissioners met in closed session for five minutes discussing the county’s open appraiser position, and again for 15 minutes with clerk Tina Spencer discussing personnel.
