Police chief there when residents, officers need him

To the editor:

So often you hear from others around the community about what Marion Police Chief Tyler Mermis does and the things he accomplishes. But what you rarely hear about is how the people in his charge feel about what he does.

A lot is made of police always being there for each other, but that isn’t always the case, especially among officers of different ranks. Tyler lives it, though.

He is a man that if you need help, he drops what he is doing to help. When your family needs something, he won’t rest until he has helped. He takes time to listen when an officer is shaken up after a bad call, even if he is with his family, which means everything to him. He is the guy who you want by your side when things are bad. Tyler takes care of us first before himself.

I’ve never heard him complain when a resident comes in to talk or heard him say he was too busy.

He is not without discipline. If you make a mistake, he will let you know and it will be dealt with no matter what. As good of a friend as he is, he can let you know when you have messed up and make sure you don’t make the same mistake again.

Maybe it’s the marine in him, or maybe it’s the friend in him. I think it’s the chief in him.
