Prairie View will once again offer a summer rehabilitation program for children in Hillsboro in June and July.
Prairie View’s Psychosocial Rehabilitation Group program is open to Marion County children who have been referred a clinician, and focuses on helping children develop social and psychosocial skills. They learn social skills and better ways of interacting with the community.
“It’s the same service we’ve been offering all year, and during the summer we find we are able to provide more intensive interventions to them,” said Jennifer Schreiner, director of community-based services for Prairie View.
The service needs to be medically necessary, which means services are based on a child’s diagnosis and the symptoms they are experiencing, Schreiner said.
Children in the program have conditions ranging from ADHD to bipolar disorder, Schreiner said.
“Some children will need a higher level of services,” she said.
This year, as in most years past, the program will be held at Hillsboro Elementary School.
All the children who attend the Hillsboro program live in Marion County.
“We will pick up the kids from their drop-off location and take them to Hillsboro,” Schreiner said.
Although it’s a Monday through Thursday program, the referring clinician decides the days individual children attend.
“It just depends on what their levels of needs are,” Schreiner said. “Every case is unique.”
Schreiner said the program is curriculum-based and provides intensive services.
“It’s not like a day camp. We are working on skills,” Schreiner said.
A typical summer brings about 45 kids to the program, she said.
