Primaries are Tuesday
Republicans and Democrats will vote Tuesday to select their candidates for numerous offices.
In the race for Republican nomination to represent the 70th District in Topeka, incumbent J. Robert Brookens is challenged by Cheryl Green. There are no Democratic candidates for the seat.
Brookens’ campaign has emphasized communication with constituents in the district and conservative values. Green has focused on her opposition to the state sales tax increase and attacked Brookens’ conservative credentials.
Incumbent Bob Hein is running against Roger K. Fleming for Marion County Commission District 1, representing Hillsboro, Lehigh, and Durham.
Hein missed commission meetings for several months because of a health problem earlier in the year, but he is confident he can serve another full term. Fleming said he is running for the opportunity to serve the county.
The race for the U.S. House of Representatives 1st District includes six Republican contenders: Jim Barnett, Sue Boldra, Marck Cobb, Tim Huelskamp, Tracy Mann, and Rob Wasinger. Alan Jilka is the only Democratic candidate.
Republicans Jerry Moran, Todd Tiahrt, Tom Little, and Robert Londerholm are running for the nomination for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by governor candidate Sam Brownback. The winner will face the Democratic nominee, who will be selected from among Robert A. Conroy, David Haley, Lisa Johnston, Charles Schollenberger, and Patrick Wiesner.
Voting will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Registered independent voters can select a primary to vote in at the polls. Deadline for Republicans or Democrats to change affiliation has passed.
First-time voters must have picture identification and proof of address, such as a bank statement or utility bill, to vote.
Voters who are unable to go to the polls Tuesday may vote in advance until noon Monday at Marion County Courthouse in the clerk’s office. Advance ballots require a brief application.
