Rachel Epp
Rachel Epp, 91, died Thursday at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro. She was born Jan. 29, 1923, to George and Lena Koch.
She attended school in Ramona, then received an associate’s degree from Tabor College in 1949. After college, she worked as a mail reader at Back to the Bible Broadcast in Lincoln, Neb.
Through friends made in Lincoln, she met Ernest Epp. She married Ernest on March 27, 1954, at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church. They lived on Ernest’s home place southeast of Hillsboro and farmed.
In June 1960, they adopted Mary Ann, 4½ years old, and John, 18 months old. Ernest had a heart attack and passed away suddenly on Oct. 25, 1963, leaving Rachel as a single mother.
She built a new home in Hillsboro after selling the farm. Later she moved into an apartment, then to Parkside Homes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; a brother, Ruben; and a sister, Mary. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann of Costa Rica; and her son, John of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Burial and memorial service were Saturday at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church. Memorial funds have been established with the church and Parkside Homes.
