What a wonderful day it was Saturday for the Old Settlers’ Day gathering. Everyone was happy and enjoying greeting old friends.

The parade was especially entertaining. What about those beautiful antique cars? Weren’t they just gorgeous? The floats were especially thought provoking. They really got the message across of the school and city operating together.

Years ago a tragedy took place in Paris. A beautiful actress was riding in an open sports car with her gentleman friend. She was wearing a lovely long silk scarf and it blew as the car sped up the road.

All at once, her scarf was caught in one of the wheels. She tried to pull it loose, but it only pulled tighter — squeezing her throat. By the time her friend saw what was happening and stopped the car, it was too late.

More recently, there was a similar tragedy. A young woman drove into a car wash and as the car started through, her scarf was caught on some of the machinery. She tried to pull it loose. A young attendant saw that something was wrong. He tried to get into the car. When he did he couldn’t get the scarf loose, he took out his pocketknife to cut it loose. It was too late.

The strangest things sometimes happen before you realize the danger. You could fall or catch your toe on a small broken rock or a crack on the sidewalk and end up with a broken bone. Be alert.
