It is customary for people to follow tradition when they celebrate family holidays. Thanksgiving Day is one of the most celebrated holidays. One of my memories of Thanksgiving when I was a young child was a large family gathering and the custom was to have the children eat after the grownups. It was the usually way of doing the celebration. A nice day was a blessing as the children could play outdoors until their turn.

No children stood beside the table, looking longingly at the turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potato casserole, green beans, and cranberry salad. Don’t forget the pumpkin pie.

Little things became a tradition. Lorraine Hadsell told me about putting corn seed beside each plate. Everyone then told what they were thankful for. What a nice tradition to start.

So many town, Marion included, have community Thanksgiving Day gatherings. Marion Ministerial Alliance sponsors the one in Marion with help from volunteers. I was reading about a restaurant that does that, serving 200 people and costing them $1,000. What a generous thing to do.

The pilgrims invited the native Indian to join them. At least that is what history stories tell us. How thankful our forefathers must have been to be in a new country with freedom of religion to comfort them. I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving get-together.
