COLUMNS:   Random Thoughts

I read in a paper about a strange worm. It was discovered in a deep part of the ocean, off the coast of southern California. Remote controlled submarines were used in the search.

The worms are about an inch long and glow. When they are disturbed, they drop a part of their body, which glows green as it falls.

I had a cousin who loved to do research. He was working with the Smithsonian Institute. He took me through his department. There were hundreds of jars containing small creatures found where the ocean once covered the land. He would be so excited over this.

This summer one of my great-granddaughters went on a dig in South America. She thought it was exciting. It was in Ecuador, where there was political unrest. I don’t want her to go back there.

My sister, who lives in Arizona, has been complaining about the heat. I tell her, she should live in cool Kansas. I have never seen an August like this in all my many years. The other morning I was wearing a sweater and threatening to turn on the furnace. The cool weather must be in the Midwest, because I know people in New York complaining about the heat.

I understand that the military program at the Marion County Lake was good. When we used to have bands play on the platform in Central Park, it was entertaining.
