COLUMNS:   Random Thoughts

Contributing writer

It has been seventy years since “Gone with the Wind” was first published. I remember the thrill of reading the book. My husband was in bed suffering from some kind of rheumatism. I started reading the book and could not put it down. I was trying to prepare lunch with one hand and hold the book in the other.

When the movie was made there was a showing in Newton and some friends and my husband and I made a trip to see it. Now it is shown on TV almost every week. The actors in the cast were just perfect.

If you were asked to name your favorite movie, what would you say? I think I would have to say, “Gone with the Wind.” It has everything—romance, sorrow, war, and the Civil War era. I have a copy of the book from when it was first published.

Americans are beginning to appreciate our national parks. We have to give Teddy Roosevelt some credit. As president, he called attention to our national parks, seeing them as wonderful and valuable. I don’t know how much land is held in our parks. But, it makes me proud of our country.

People who travel here from other countries want to see them. I should have listed them in my “bucket list”. I have waited too long though. I’ll have to look at pictures in books and magazines.
