Well, it’s all over now and time to store our goodies for another year.
Many went all out in their decorating for the Christmas season. If they own really nice things, they enjoy showing. I know one woman who has a collection of nativity scenes. She had gathered them from all over the world. Another woman has a collection of houses and buildings, and little trains run in the village. There are bridges and tunnels to add to the fun. Men collect railroads and ancient cars. Emma Poe had a large dollhouse with furniture to fit. I think it is now in possession of the Peabody Museum. I used to bring dolls from other countries to a granddaughter. I once put some collections I have away so secretly — I can’t find them. It is frustrating.
Wouldn’t it be great if the town would use an empty downtown store and invite people to display their collections? Look how people sometimes have their own museums, especially celebrities like Elvis Presley. People will drive miles to visit those displays.
When my children were younger, I would urge them to collect something for a hobby. I remember my son collected match books. We put them on a door in the basement. Some are still there. It really could be a learning lesson.
Stamps and coins make good objects. Do you have a collection? Do you want to start one? I know a fellow who has hundreds of farming miniatures — trucks, plows, and farm machinery.
They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
