Random Thoughts: Births, deaths, and presidential beer parties

Contributing writer

Did you miss me last week? I missed me. The only excuse I have is that I had some family here and that claimed my attention. I love my family.

I am sorry for all the people who have lost loved ones in terrible tragedies. Young people are so excited to be on vacation they think they are safe.

A dear old friend, Bill Pickering, has died. He was such a fine person who enjoyed people and told great stories. He will be missed.

My sympathy to all those in sorrow.

Now for a happy thought. I have another little great-great-great-grandson, little Jacob. His mother and grandmother brought him to see me. He is just a few weeks old. Holding the dear little boy was so much fun. His older brother, Luke, not 2 years old, came, too. He is a dear one, too.

Hasn’t this been the most delightful July you have ever seen? The temperature gets down in the 50s and I want to turn the furnace on.

I try not to criticize our president, but really: Throwing a beer party in the White House is a little much, isn’t it? I feel that everything going on there should be dignified.

I know I’m old and probably not up with the times, but this casual life has gone a little too far with both clothing (or the lack of it) and drinking (every show on TV always has a scene with characters toasting each other). Smoking has been cut down some, but the language has become pretty vulgar.

I remember the ’20s. In fact, I was a flapper. But it wasn’t as bad then. At least I don’t think so. Doesn’t anyone care?
