Random Thoughts: Writer returns to reading

I’m back! I think. I like to move around so I convinced my children to bring me home from the nursing home. I’m depending on home health and my daughter, Wanda, who is visiting me. She lives in Colorado Springs and will stay here through the month of October.

This is the month for accidents. My little five-year-old great-great-grandson who lives near Wamego, fell at the playground and broke his arm. Poor, little boy. I guess he thought he could do anything the big boys did on the jungle gym.

Bill Nelson, my old preacher friend, is in a nursing home in McPherson. In a letter, he told me he walks with a walker and even then he has fallen 10 times. The doctor thinks his heart fails. Now he is on medication that helps. He is always positive.

I have been reading. I read a cute little book about two women taking a trip to Europe. Humorous at times and thought-provoking, too. If you have ever traveled overseas, you will remember similar experiences. If you haven’t traveled much you will enjoy the book anyway.

The Wichita Eagle is trying to encourage citizens to read. They have suggested the whole city read “My Antonia.” It is a story about the early days of settling in Kansas. I have read several books about that but all are different. I think I’ll read this one, too.

I also have read “The Pot Luck Club.” We have had a lot of pot luck get togethers. So that book is very apropos. Six women form a club and their various lives are the story. They all give their favorite recipes.

I remember Frances Hoch used to put recipes in her column in the Marion Record. They were good. She always used the best ingredients, real butter, large eggs, and lots of spices and herbs. Cooking now is considered an art.
