Raymond Combs

Raymond L. “Meatball” Combs, 82, of Herington, died June 17 Herington Municipal Hospital.

Born on March 5, 1928, in McFarland to Thomas W. and Mae (Mullins) Combs, he was a Herington High School graduate.

He retired in 1988 as an engineer for Southern Pacific.

He was a corporal in the U.S. Army Aircorps, serving as an aircraft controller during World War II.

On June 20, 1955, he married Glenna Faye Blacksher at Miami, Okla. She survives.

His parents; three brothers, Roy, Don, and William Lee; and two sisters, Shirley Wilson and Joyce Smith, preceded him in death.

Other survivors include a son, Craig of Salina; two daughters, Pam Alexander of Herington and Tracey of Salina; a brother, Tommy of Hope; a sister, Phyllis Wahlert of Columbia, Ga.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was Monday at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Herington. Full military honors were provided by a special Fort Riley funeral detail.

Memorials have been established with Herington Hospital Foundation in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home & Crematory, Herington Chapel, 404 S Broadway St, Herington KS 67449-3038.
