Reservoir a common destination for camping clubs

Staff writer

When the Ninnescah chapter of Good Sams camping club arrived at Hillsboro Cove on Thursday at Marion Reservoir, they were greeted by excellent camping conditions.

“It’s pretty. It’s clean,” club member Janice Headgepath said. “The weather has been wonderful. We don’t always get that.”

The reservoir and Marion County Park and Lake are common destinations for camping clubs from the Wichita area.

The Ninnescah chapter of Good Sams was founded in Clearwater — the chapter’s name even means “clear water,” one member said.

The location of the reservoir and county lake contribute to the number of visiting camping clubs.

They are close enough that it isn’t a long trip from the Wichita area, Headgepath said.

But they aren’t so close that it is like camping in someone’s back yard.

Members of the club don’t do a lot of fishing or boating at the lakes they visit. Instead, club members make a point of going into town and seeing local attractions.

Club members visited the Hillsboro Farmers Market on Thursday, and they planned to have dinner Saturday at Olde Towne. Headgepath said the area residents they meet are most often friendly.

“We just come out to have fun, and we do,” Janice’s husband, Jesse Headgepath said.
