Sadie Bernhardt

Sadie Sanders Bernhardt, daughter of Benjamin and Cora (Mansfield) Sanders, was born Jan. 25, 1912, on a farm five miles southwest of Marion.

She was one of six children born to this union. The deceased are Sadie’s parents; one brother Mart; and sisters Elsie Olsen, Vesta McIntosh, Alta Hett, and Marjorie Pankratz.

Sadie graduated from Morning Star School, Canton High School, and attended Tabor College at Hillsboro. She taught school several years in Marion County.

At an early age, she accepted Christ as her personal Savior. She joined the Marion Evangelical United Brethren Church and it later became Eastmoor United Methodist Church. She served her church in many ways. She was a Sunday School Superintendent of the Primary and Junior Departments for 25 years. She dearly loved working with children and teachers.

She served on the Building Committee of the Eastmoor church and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Society of EUM church. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and a charter member in the Stitch & Chatter Club.

Her hobbies included golfing and bowling. She thoroughly enjoyed gardening.

On April 29, 1938, she was united in marriage to Albert Bernhardt. One daughter, Margie Ann, was born to this union.

Surviving members of her family are daughter Margie Ann and son-in-law Richard Schwartz; grandson Thane; granddaughter Peri Ann and her husband Ray; and five great-grandsons: Landon, Bronson, Richard, Benjamin, and Daniel.

Sadie and Albert operated the Marion Hardware & Gift Shop for 25 years. After celebrating 50 years of marriage, she lost her beloved husband to cancer.

Sadie died Nov. 4, 2010, at St. Luke Living Center, Marion, at the age of 98.

 A funeral was at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 5, 2010, at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion.

Interment was in Marion Cemetery.

 Memorial funds have been established at Eastmoor United Methodist Church and Marion County Emergency Food Bank in care of Zeiner Funeral Home, Marion.
