Sales tax receipts jumped in June

Staff writer

Revenue from sales tax increased 21.6 percent in June compared with 2010, Marion County Commission learned Aug. 31.

The county received $67,162 in sales tax for June. June 2010 sales tax revenue was $55,253.

One possible explanation for the increase was that people may have hurried to make big purchases before a 0.5 percent sales tax increase went into effect at the beginning of July, County Clerk Carol Maggard said after the meeting.

The total sales tax received so far this year is $435,592, an increase of about 4.4 percent from 2010.

In other business:

  • The county received a dividend of $10,412 from Employers Mutual Company insurance. The company issued the dividend because the insurance pool the county belongs to had less in claims than it paid in premiums in 2010. It was the third consecutive year the county received a dividend, Maggard said.
  • New Road and Bridge Superintendent Randy Crawford will be paid $4,417 per month. James Druse Jr. will be paid $3,423 as road foreman.
  • The commission will spend $2,430 with Pur-O-Zone to replace a floor scrubber for the courthouse. Bids for other scrubbers from the same company were $3,985 and $2,348.
  • Cooperative Grain and Supply of Hillsboro will supply 6,550 gallons of fuel to Road and Bridge Department for $20,985. Cardie Oil Company of Tampa bid $21,494.
  • Rod’s Tire and Service of Hillsboro will supply 136 tires and 36 O-rings for road grader tires for $37,454. Cardie Oil Company bid $50,372.
