Salvation Army collects for locals

People shopping in Marion and Hillsboro this Christmas season are likely to see little red Salvation Army kettles in local banks and businesses.

Alvin and Arlene Hett of Hillsboro are the Salvation Army’s local contacts. Arlene said they have placed 25 of the kettles, mostly in Hillsboro and Marion, but also in Florence and Durham.

They plan to have a SA station and bell-ringers at Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Hillsboro on Dec. 19.

The Salvation Army provided envelopes for insertion in local newspapers for people who wish to send donations by mail to the Hetts. Arlene Hett was happy to report that several envelopes have been returned to them with donations.

Hett said they have been SA volunteers for six months but have had little money to work with. They have had several calls about people needing help with utilities, rent, or other essentials.

The money they collect between now and Jan. 3 will be used during the next year to help people living in Marion County. A small administrative fee will go to Salvation Army headquarters.
