Marion police officers arrested two juveniles and one 18-year-old during a “saturation patrol” Saturday night and Sunday morning.

Police Chief Tyler Mermis said it was raining when officers stopped an underage driver for failing to use a turn signal near the cemetery at the corner of Kellison and North Freeborn Sts.

The canine unit was at the scene and police discovered the driver to be in possession of tobacco, marijuana, and drug paraphernalia.

Police arrested a second juvenile for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, and 18-year-old Dirk E. Young of Marion was arrested for possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and contributing to child misconduct.

Throughout the night, Mermis said warnings for no tag lamp, tail lamp, and an improper U-turn as well as a citation for failure to stop at a stop sign were issued.

However, no other arrests were made during the saturation patrol.

The patrol utilized all of Marion’s officers, and was paid for by Families and Communities Together with federal money through the Stop Act grant.

Ashlee Gann, executive director of FACT, said the patrol was spurred on by a survey given to county high school students in 2012 in which a majority of students indicated that they believed police would not catch them if they drank alcohol.

“We live in a large rural county where kids think they can get away with stuff,” she said. “We’re trying to change their perceptions about illegal activities.”
