Season opener a mixed bag for Warriors

Baseball Warriors crush Herington

The Marion High School baseball team was dominant Tuesday against Herington in Marion.

The Warriors won the first game of the doubleheader, 15-0, in three innings. Almost every Marion batter recorded a hit with the Warriors scoring 11 runs in the first inning.

Taylor Heidebrecht went 2-for-2 with 2 runs at the top of the lineup. Cole Lewman was 2-for-2 with 3 runs and an RBI in the three hole. Austin Pedersen went 2-for-3 with 3 runs and 4 RBIs in the cleanup spot.

Caleb Williams went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Grif Case went 1-for-2 with 2 runs and an RBI.

On top of their dominance at the plate, pitcher Ethan Hett allowed only one hit to Railer batters. Of the 9 outs in his three innings of work, 8 were strikeouts.

The Warriors won the second game, 15-1, in five innings. Cole Lewman was the star at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a run and 6 RBIs. Heidebrecht scored 4 runs for Marion. Zach Lewman went 1-for-2 with 2 runs and an RBI.

Pitcher Austin Pederson started the second game. He surrendered 2 hits and struck out 3 in three innings.

Softball

The Warrior softball team lost both games to Herington.

The Railers bested the Warriors, 15-2, in five innings in the first game. Herington compiled 9 runs in the first inning to take control of the game.

JayDee Schafers and Andrea Norquist scored the 2 runs for Marion.

The Warriors fought back in the second but fell, 9-7.

In the first inning, Norquist hit a triple that scored Schafers, Guetersloh hit a single to score Norquist, and Erin Brown knocked in Guetersloh and Raelene Allen on a double. The Warriors took a 4-2 lead after the opening frame.

Herington shortstop Leeza Enfield was all over the bases in the second game; she drove in a run with a single and scored on a wild pitch to tie the score at 4 in the second inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Kaitlyn Patterson drove in Cara Meyer with a sacrifice ground out to give Herington the lead.

The Railers exploded in the sixth inning. Enfield, Mackenzie Dornbush, Meyer, and Courtney Crosby, and Patterson all scored runs to give Herington a 9-4 lead.

The Warriors charged back in the bottom of the inning. Guetersloh drove in Montana Percell and Schafers with a bases-loaded single. Allen brought in Megan Richmond with a single to put the Warriors within two runs.

Raelene Allen held Herington in the top of the seventh, but Railer pitcher Briana Blackwell blanked Marion in the seventh, forcing three groundouts.

Both the baseball and softball teams play 4 p.m. Friday at Moundridge.
