Senior Center

One good turn leads to another

A cucumber and apple give-away July 21 and 22 had many happy returns on Monday, when the senior center received two jars of bread-and-butter pickles made from the cucumbers.

The Kansas Food Bank in Wichita had brought boxes and boxes of cucumbers and apples. With a short time to get the word out, there were fears of an overload. But all were gone by the afternoon of July 22, with some going to the local food bank.

Gary and Karen Chaput picked up this month’s commodities at Council Grove.

Those unloading and sacking them were Ivanlee Timm, Shirley Moore, Vern Bowers, Norman Funk, Sue Clough, Shirley Bowers, Jon and Suzanne Thole, Virginia Downing, Jerry Kline, and Clayton Hamm.

National Day of the Cowboy was July 22. Everyone was encouraged to wear something appropriate for the occasion.

Fred Puttroff, Estelle McCarty, Ralph Popp, Sue Clough, Neysa Eberhard, and Arlene and Vern Bowers read cowboy poetry after lunch. This was followed by singing “Home on the Range” with Shirley Bowers as pianist.

Sue Clough is now taking her turn at the reservation table.

Sixty people were present July 27 for the winning menu chosen by those who eat here. The favorite menu is ham loaf, spinach salad, sweet potato casserole, cherry pie, and ice cream. Residents of Hilltop Manor joined regular center diners for the meal.

The program included a joke told by Gayla Ratzlaff and a presentation on Schowalter Villa of Hesston by Diane Yoder and Amy Wedel.

On Aug. 10, members of the Dorcas Society of Our Savior Lutheran Church will demonstrate how they crochet sleeping mats for people in Haiti out of plastic bags.
