Marion County Senior Center correspondent
Our Senior Center Sensations Walk Kansas team has made the 423 miles across Kansas and we are on our way back. We also are among the best fruit and vegetable eaters in Marion County.
Pauline Edmunds celebrated her birthday April 6 with us. Two of us who eat here regularly are members of the first class she taught (and the best class she taught).
“Keynotes,” a publication of the area agency on aging in Manhattan, had an article about Virginia Downing in the March-April issue. She is pictured helping Leon McClure with taxes.
There also is an article on Older Kansans Day which was Feb. 18 in Topeka. The article included a photo of Rep. Bob Brookens, Anita Brookens, Jerry Kline, and Noreen Weems.
Leonard Klassen and I share an April 7 birthday. This year we were encouraged to provide pie as a treat. Henrietta Waner made cherry pies for us and we had ice cream cups, too. Two of the creative people in this building made me a birthday card, showing me on the exercise bicycle, riding a rainbow to Elvis Presley’s picture. Inside was an obscure Presley song, “Riding the Rainbow.” What fun!
We have been signing petitions for a smoke-free Kansas provided by American Cancer Society/Relay for Life volunteer Rhonda Brenzikofer.
We sometimes provide lessons in basic knowledge, when needed. We discovered Jerry Kline did not know, or remember, how to skip, so Theresa Graham showed him. What else do you want us to teach you?
One day we were part of a milestone event for Jon and Suzanne Thole when their cell phone rang and they received news of a new grandchild.
Rhonda Shur-Abell of Hospice Care of Kansas, McPherson, spoke April 8.
National Volunteer Week is April 19-25. The department for elderly will honor its volunteers Monday and there will be more recognition April 22.
Join us April 22 for a presentation by Michelle Foth Clore of Medicalodges of Herington.
