We finished Volunteer Week April 23 with Virginia Downing honoring F.I.S.H. (Friends I Should Help) drivers. These drivers are available Tuesdays and Fridays to take folks to doctor appointments in Marion. Mary Hett honored the quilters and other special people.

We had a successful fish fry April 23. Thanks to all who helped and all who came to eat fish. Fred Puttroff was recognized for extra time he worked.

Keith Holtsclaw brought a painting to display on our easel.

We had a big crowd April 29 when we had 73 in to eat enchiladas — our all time favorite menu item. Hilltop Manor residents joined us that day. We also celebrated Jerry Harp’s birthday.

Frankie Turner presented a program on handwriting analysis, with everyone having a pencil and piece of paper to write their names to be analyzed.

Come join us for lunch May 13. There will be a presentation about Symphony in the Flint Hills coming June 13.

Last Week’s News:

We’re busy this week honoring our many volunteers. We could not function without those who give their time to help.

Marion County Department for Elderly honored their volunteers who do transportation or prepare the newsletter. They had a party April 20.

I recognized the nutrition site volunteers April 22. The theme for the week was “Hands that serve, Hands that care.” Henretta Waner baked hand-shaped cookies as a treat and we sang a new song to the tune of “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.” These volunteers deliver Meals on Wheels, set up and serve meals, take meal tickets and money, or decorate tables.

We celebrated Sylvia Helmer’s birthday April 16 and also Pearl Helmer’s, delayed from March.

Charlie and Blanche Cowan wrote to us from Missouri, enclosing a poem, “Don’t Kid Yourself Brother, Old Age is Hell.”

On April 21, we celebrated Gayla Ratzlaff’s first year as director of the department for elderly. We had a little party at coffee break, with special guests, Noreen Weems and Don Ratzlaff.

Leon McClure was the birthday honoree April 22. Following lunch, Michelle Clore and Gary Sanders of Medicalodge of Herington gave a presentation.

Join us May 6 when our program will be by Mindy Hill, occupational therapist.
