Senior centers receive assistance

Senior Citizens of Marion County Inc. approved two requests June 18 to use taxpayer money for maintenance items.

Marion Senior Center received $400 to pay for half of termite control. Goessel Senior Center received $400 to repair a gas leak.

The group will meet again at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Hillsboro Senior Center to discuss other funding requests.

Hillsboro seniors will serve lunch. Reservations must be made today by calling (620) 947-2304 or the Department on Aging at (620) 382-3580.

Tom Duggan of Tampa will represent Marion County at a senior fair in Salina.

Seniors reported activities from centers in the county. Quilting continues at Burns. In Durham, Irvin and Muriel Christiansen celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Ryan Stucky spoke to Goessel seniors about dousing for pipelines, graves, and house foundations.

Marion has automatic door openers and will be installing new carpet. A Wii game system also is available at the Marion center.

Peabody was host for a Memorial Day brunch and a barbecue July 1. Tampa had a potluck dinner. Robert Unruh talked about his trip to Africa. Hillsboro took a group to the Crown Uptown in Wichita. Women displayed their wedding dresses. Jared Jost of Hillsboro spoke about the Hillsboro Endowment Fund.

This year’s annual meeting Oct. 21 will mark the organization’s 50th year.

Price for the meal at that meeting was increased from $4.50 to $5. Those who register will receive a brochure instead of a ticket.

New board members will be installed and retiring members will be recognized. Senior centers are encouraged to set up tables with scrapbooks and other memorabilia.
