Small-town charm appeals to new veterinarian
Rachel Davelaar, 25, is a new veterinarian at Animal Health Center in Marion. She started July 12.
Davelaar learned of the position while working in Nebraska and was connected with Animal Health Center veterinarian Jessica Laurin.
This is Davelaar’s first veterinarian job after graduating from Iowa State University this past May.
Davelaar is a mixed-animal veterinarian but enjoys surgery.
“It’s really rewarding,” she said. “You see a problem and then you fix it.”
She is originally from Sioux Center in northwest Iowa. She lived on a dairy farm for the first 12 years of her life before moving to Michigan where her father studied to be a minister in the Christian Reformed Church.
Davelaar still calls Iowa home and she relates to the atmosphere in Marion.
“I’ve lived in a small town; I grew up in a rural area,” she said. “I’m not a city person.”
