Snelling critical following crash

Dean Snelling, 39, of Goessel continues to recuperate at Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis Street, Wichita, following a two-car crash April 15 in McPherson County.

Snelling was driving southbound on 27th Avenue near Cherokee Road at 6:40 a.m. when Dustin W. Frank, 21, Canton, who was northbound, crossed the center line, striking Snelling’s pickup head-on. Both men were transported to Via Christi Hospital on St. Francis Street.

His family began posting information regarding Snelling at 8 p.m. April 15 on http://www.caringbridge.org regarding Snelling.

According to the information, Snelling was in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit at Via Christi with multiple injuries.

He has a fractured right wrist and left hip, a fractured lumbar vertebra, a tear in his aorta, multiple lacerations, and a bruised colon.

His first surgery was April 16 to repair the torn aorta followed by surgeries April 18 on his wrist and hip.

He had another surgery Thursday to repair his wrist. The surgery went well but after he was returned to his room, he went into respiratory arrest and his lungs shut down.

He was placed on a ventilator to stabilize him. By Saturday, he was up to 100 percent on the ventilator and X-rays showed improvement.

Snelling’s parents, Dale and Tootsie, and his siblings continue to stay by his side at the hospital.

A fund has been established at Central National Bank, 231 E. Main St., Marion, and 4838 W. Central St., Wichita, to help the Snelling family with expenses while their son and brother recovers.

Checks should be made to Dale or Loretta Snelling or the Dean Snelling Benefit Account and can be mailed or dropped off at the banks.
