CENTRE:   Solomon ends Centre's undefeated league season

Staff writer

The Centre Cougars were hoping to be undefeated in regular season league play this year, but the Solomon Gorillas dashed those hopes Friday by upending Centre, 69-64, at Solomon.

Playing mostly an outside game the first quarter, Centre led, 13-9, at the end of the quarter. Post player Trevor Troutt didn’t touch the ball until the final minute of the quarter, adding 2 points. Rustyn Kerbs had the opening basket and Brian Burhoop made three 3-point shots.

Scoring two consecutive 3-point shots, Solomon took the lead, 15-13, in the opening minute of the second quarter. Troutt was fouled as he scored on Centre’s next possession. He added a free throw to give the lead back to Centre for the final time.

At halftime, Centre trailed, 32-25. The Cougars didn’t give up. They continued to play hard in the second half, but Solomon was almost perfect from the free-throw line and built a strong lead.

Centre trailed by as much as 11 points in the fourth quarter but the team battled back to within 4 points in the final 20 seconds of the game. That was as close as they came to winning the game.

After remaining scoreless in the first half, Tanner Brunner scored 14 points in the second, including two 3-point shots and 6-of-8 free throws. He led at the boards with eight rebounds.

Troutt led Centre’s scoring with 21 points. Burhoop also scored in double digits with 12 points. Alex Hajek provided four assists, and Burhoop had three steals.
