Speed is king on the diamond

Marion Head Baseball Coach Tyler Mermis expects the team to run early and often throughout the spring sports season. He said that the team’s lineup will be based on hitting for average. When the Marion players get on base, the team will bunt, hit-and-run, and steal their way home.

“We will be expecting a lot of steals,” Head Baseball Coach Tyler Mermis said. “We will be pretty unpredictable in a good way.”

The Warriors are led by a battery of experienced position players. Brian Fruechting, Wil Case, Eric Kjellin, Adam Maag, Isaac Hett, Colton Olson, and Marshall Ragland are the returning letter-winners.

Mermis also expects the team’s pitching to be strong. Ragland and Freuchting are the team’s main starters, but Mermis said that he would be willing to plug any one of his 13 pitchers into any role.

The team has a roster of 24 players, which is the biggest the team has been in its short history. Mermis expects everyone to contribute.

“All the freshmen are well known for playing Babe Ruth baseball,” Mermis said. “Three of them played on the state championship team that went to Iowa.”
