St. Luke Living Center news

Bakers used an M&M shortbread cookie recipe Friday morning but our cookies actually were Hersey’s Mini-Kissable shortbread cookies. Good and colorful.

St. Luke Auxiliary Easter bunnies, Janice and Ross Case, brought boxes of little wicker baskets filled with green grass and candy eggs for each resident.

Friday just happened to be Irene Kinsey’s 93rd birthday. We were served a piece of decorated chocolate cake in her honor with our noon meal, a gift from her son, Arlyn, who was here from Cary, N.C.

Our scheduled bingo caller was unable to be with us that afternoon, and it was up to our “Man Friday,” Bill Schimpf, to help us call and cover the right numbers.

In spite of blustery weather, the weekend began on a happy note because it was one of Gene Vinduska’s Saturday mornings to brighten our lives with his accordion music.

Arlyn Kinsey hosted a party Saturday afternoon in our front dining room for friends of his mother, Irene. Birthday cake, nuts, hot drinks, and iced tea were served to the group.

The guest minister Palm Sunday afternoon was the Reverend Josh Esner of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Marion, who added to this celebration by bringing his guitar and a palm leaf for each of us.

We spent Monday morning receiving some “pretty up” assistance but the afternoon was a bit more exuberant. St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary has entrusted us with a new Wii game system. It also included games of bowling, boxing, baseball, tennis, and golf. Also added were Wii Play and MarioKart. Wasting no time, the Wii players began Monday afternoon. Bowling may have been the most popular on “opening day.” Racecar driving also caused quite a stir.

While some of us were receiving hair care with Bonnie Tuesday morning, others began “stuffing” Easter eggs. We were not finished with this once-a-year pleasant task when time ran out and actually needed to buy some more “stuffing.”

That afternoon, three St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary representatives found their way into our large windowed dining room, cleared and secured a table, and began to cover it with Easter delight. There was a pastel pink cloth, an attractive ceramic centerpiece, and plates of delicious pineapple angel food cake, cheese-filled crackers, and a chocolate egg half. Thank you, Joyce Smith, Dalene Tharp, and Judy Dannenfelser, who not only served but also visited with us, and to Betty Johnson who could not be here.

Dick Pracht was here Wednesday morning for prayer group. He shared some Easter thoughts and sang a favorite anthem, “Rise Again,” by Dallas Holmes.

We did a little activity juggling in the afternoon. A group read the Marion County Record and enjoyed the picture of our egg-stuffers on the front page in glorious color. Meanwhile, a couple of hardworking residents attached handles to the Easter sack holding the baskets, bringing that little project to a conclusion.

Luke Siebert and the dog in her life, Tiger, visited Wednesday and brought a beautiful Easter lily, which could use a “do not water” label — it looked so natural.

We enjoyed the company of another adorable canine earlier in the week when Paula Edmunds brought her Yorkie pup, Peppernut, to work.
