With crossed fingers and bated breath our bakers mixed up a batch of highly recommended German drop cookies Friday morning that used neither eggs, baking soda, or powder. There was no need for concern though, the cookies, a recipe of veteran Girl Scout leader Joan Gusweiler, were delicious.

Bill Schimpf pulled double-duty that afternoon when he used his bingo crook in the retrieval of the last hanging Easter decoration from the ceiling. Lois Winter called the numbers and awarded the winners before serving the remaining “German” cookies with snacks and drinks.

The Reverand Mike Eurit and pianist wife, Joyce, of Eastmoor United Methodist Church, were here to lead Sunday afternoon’s worship service.

There was a time to pretty-up Monday morning, a time of mixing and baking two pans of brownies, and time in the afternoon to celebrate April birthdays of Irene Kinsey, Josephine Stroda, and Betty Thompson.

In the evening, the new Care to Share group met in the chapel.

We coordinated hair care with Bonnie Tuesday morning and a mental muscle activity where we used scissors and crayons to create a corkboard display depicting signs of spring. Beautician Bonnie created a blooming display in her little shop, too.

Alex Stuchlik’s afternoon visit evolved into a very enjoyable variety show. With accordionist Alex’s invitation and encouragement, the entertainment, included in order of appearance, a vocal duet, “Two White Roses” of Stuchlik and Gutsch; the Chicken Dance duo of Reznicek and Gutsch; The Flying Dutchman team of Smith, Reznicek, and Kukuk; Prune Waltz duet by Stuchlik and Martin Hajek, and a vocal rendition of Tom-Cat Waltz by Barbara Libal with Stuchlik on accordion. The latter two songs were sung in Bohemian.

Dick Pracht met with residents in our chapel Wednesday morning for the weekly prayer group. Lydia Batt played the piano as we sang hymns Dick had chosen.

The 30 minutes our friend, John Ratzlaff, spent with us in the afternoon seemed to be a very short 30 minutes. We enjoy his special piano talent immensely and were quite pleased when he agreed to come again.

Shirley Bowers was here promptly at 10 a.m. Thursday to lead hymn singing. We decided April was our lucky month because the calendar gave her four Thursdays here this time.

Just before lunch Ken and Bonnie Vinduska brought rose moss, periwinkle, and potting soil and helped Amelia, who supervised the patting of the young plants, into three outdoor containers at the front of our facility. They left a large watering can nearby in case Mother Nature needs some assistance.

The unsettled spring weather prompted our decision to cancel a “outing” plan, opting for a movie, “The Big Trail” starring a young John Wayne, and popcorn from our big red popping machine.
