The board of education of Centre USD 397 accepted the resignation of Kelly Steiner Monday as head girls’ basketball coach at Centre High School. Steiner said the need for more family time contributed to his decision.

The following summer camps were approved:

Volleyball, 7-9 a.m., June 15-19, supervised by Yvonne Burhoop.

Boys’ basketball, supervised by Greg Wyatt and Tyler Weinbrenner: weight room, 6-7 p.m., Monday-Wednesday-Friday, all summer; 7-8:30 p.m., May 27-30; 7-8 p.m., Monday-Wednesday-Friday, all June; 7-8:30 p.m., Monday-Wednesday-Friday, July 1-17 (shooting and pick up games).

Five students were awarded $5,500 Loren E. and Clara Mowrer scholarships as approved by the board. They were Adam Kristek, Kirstin Johnson, Savik Howard, Sheila Makovec, and Josh Leach. An additional $5,000 will be placed in an escrow account for the 2009-10 year.

In other actions, the board:

  • Approved continued attendance of Amanda Floyd at Centre High School as an out-of-district student. She lives at Carlton.
  • Authorized employment of two adults as extra summer help at a cost of up to $4,050 in wages and fixed charges.

  • Approved a new CHS Student Handbook.
  • Approved purchase of a series of reading textbooks for Pre-K-sixth grade from Pearson Scott Foresman for not more than $15,000, excluding shipping.

Several lengthy executive sessions were held to discuss personnel and certificated staff negotiations.
