Stick horse races part of Day on the Farm

Stick horse races for jockeys of all ages will be a new event Aug. 18 at Agri-Urban’s 16th annual Day on the Farm fundraising event.

Participants in the new Willow Spring Downs Derby are encouraged to bring their own stick horses, but some additional ones will be available on site, at the farm of Carol Duerksen and Maynard Knepp, 1582 Falcon Road, rural Hillsboro.

Women and girls who attend the derby are encouraged to wear festive “derby hats” for the occasion. Derby races will be run at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 1 p.m.

Other activities for children, families, grandparents, and grandchildren include milking a goat, catching a pig, braiding ropes, lassoing a plastic steer, and wood branding. Visitors can also ride pony carts, horses, and wagons, and climb through a hay bale maze.

The goal of Day on the Farm is to connect rural and urban families and to raise money for Western District Conference, Mennonite Church U.S.A., and Bethel College. Some proceeds are re-invested in Agri-Urban.

Lunch, served at 11:30 a.m., is free of charge for all participants. Donations are accepted. For more information, call (316) 283-6300 or (620)386-0709.
