Street will be paid for by residents

Street improvements in the 800 block of South Roosevelt Street, Marion, will be paid entirely by landowners with the assessment being per square foot.

Roger Schwab, who lives in the block, had asked the City Council to consider paying for a portion of the project as it did in Country Club Heights.

A bid of $81,664 from Hett Construction, Marion, was approved for the project.

A public hearing will be at 4:30 p.m. June 29 in the city building.

In other business:

  • A public hearing for comment regarding the city’s comprehensive plan will be at 7 p.m. June 30 in the city building basement. Copies of the plan are available for review at the city office and library.
  • One light will remain on the city’s water tower. Others will be removed as a cost-saving measure.
  • Auditor Jan Nolde of Swindoll, Janzen, Hawk and Loyd presented a favorable annual review.
  • An energy-saving streetlight bulb is being tested at Fifth and Main. It appears the bulb is not bright enough. A grant would be available to purchase the fixtures if officials determine they want to have the dimmer light.
  • The former city swimming pool shelter house that was relocated to the city’s baseball complex is in need of stability. An estimate to repair it will be presented at a future council meeting.
  • The Charlie Faust Memorial at the baseball complex was vandalized when someone removed a hand-carved stone. Officials will determine how it can be replaced.

The next regular meeting will be at 4:30 p.m. June 29.
