Street work begins this week

Managing editor

Street projects began Tuesday in Marion that will cause some headaches for motorists. Completion of the work is anticipated by Friday.

Street Superintendent Marty Fredrickson told Marion City Council Monday that construction workers will begin on East Main Street, replacing asphalt overlay from Coble to Locust streets.

APAC-Shears of Kansas also will do an overlay on North Cedar Street from Hudson Street to U.S. 56.

There will be one lane of traffic open at all times, Fredrickson said. Workers plan to shut down from 3:30 to 4 p.m. each day because of school traffic.

Changes to zoning regs

An amendment was approved to the city’s zoning regulations that will allow a potential landowner to apply for a conditional use permit before purchasing the property. The former regulations required the current landowner to apply for the change.

Mayor Mary Olson asked if the planning commission was going to ask for more changes to the regulations. City Administrator David Mayfield said that was about the only way to do it, to address issues as they arise.

Special meeting planned

The city council will meet at 5 p.m. today to review and discuss applicants for the city clerk position.

Mayfield also asked them to consider the hiring of a full-time secretary in the city office, which they will discuss at that meeting.

At one time, there was a third full-time person in the city office. With City Clerk Angela Lange leaving in 10 days, Mayfield said he was concerned about there being sufficient time to properly train a new clerk if there wasn’t another full-time person in the office.

Mayfield continued there were two applicants for the clerk’s position that were good candidates for a secretarial job. The pay would be $10 to $12 per hour.

Councilman Steve Smith asked if a part-time employee would be sufficient. Lange responded that it takes someone being there full time to be properly trained.
