Strong City ropes in 72nd rodeo

“Fasten your seatbelts, and get ready for hides, humps, hooves and horns!”

Veteran announcer Roger Mooney’s trademark invocation is set to ring out Friday as the 72nd annual Flint Hills Rodeo — the oldest continuous rodeo in Kansas — returns to Strong City.

Friday’s events will begin with a trade show at 5 p.m. followed by a rodeo performance at 8 p.m. and a cowboy dance featuring Rusty Rierson and Heartland Express at 10 p.m.

The annual rodeo parade at 2 p.m. Saturday will be followed by a kids’ stick-horse rodeo and trade show at 5 p.m., a second rodeo performance at 8 p.m. and a cowboy dance featuring Jay Scott and Too Country at 10 p.m.

After a church service at 10:45 a.m. and another stick-horse rodeo and trade show at 12:30 p.m., the final rodeo performance will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. Active-duty military personnel will be admitted free,

Reserved seats are $10 in advance and $12 at the gate. General admission is $9 for adults and $7 for children 12 and younger. For more information or to order tickets, call (620) 273-6480.
