Tabor College to offer concerts

Tabor College students will perform a symphonic band concert and an opera showcase, both free this month.

The symphonic band concert will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

Tabor’s opera showcase is at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wohlgemuth Music Education Center.

The opening concert themed “Flourish!” will feature a woodwind trio, brass ensemble and Jazz Combo along with the symphonic band.

Senior Elisha Cairns will be featured as a clarinet soloist.

Shawn Knopp, assistant professor of music and director of instrumental music, will direct at the concert.

“An Evening with Gilbert and Sullivan,” Tabor’s opera showcase, will feature comedic scenes from operas “Patience,” “Trial by Jury,” and “The Yeoman of the Guard.”

“We’ve chosen pieces and scenes that share the more humorous side of opera,” said Jen Stephenson, assistant professor of music and director of vocal studies. “This is a big accomplishment for our students and they deserve a lot of credit for the success of the event.”
