Sunflower Senior Citizens met Nov. 8 at the Senior Center. This month’s meeting was a dual celebration. The group enjoyed a traditional Thanksgiving meal with hosts Gary and Carole Spohn preparing turkey and dressing and other members furnishing the usual side dishes. A decorated birthday cake was served with the desserts celebration of Tillie Hein’s 103rd birthday. Hein’s son, Donald, and his wife, Caroly,n of Omaha, Neb., were special guests. The couple spent a few days with Hein. The group went out with Jim and Kris Srajer, Grant, and Cole for supper Nov. 8 in Abilene for Hein’s birthday.

In keeping with “turkey day,” Carole Spohn presented a short program about Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch operated by David Mueller and Danny Williams east of Tampa. Others present were Tom and Dee Duggan, Leo and Sue Yanda, Raymond and Janet Bielefeld, Willis and Eleanor Herbel, Mary Clemmer, Shirley Zaideman, Darlene Cramer, Leona Kleiber, Betty Mueller, Don Witt, Donna Bundy, Georgia Spohn, and Jane Vajnar. The group elected officers for 2012. Jane Vajnar and Dee Duggan were re-elected as president and treasurer, respectively. Raymond Bielefeld was chosen for vice president, and Betty Mueller for secretary.

Lucille Kerbs visited her daughter, Connie Thompson, on Nov. 9 in Abilene Nov. 9 and enjoyed dinner out.

Georgia Spohn met Lenora Graham and Paulette Zook of Florence on Nov. 7 in Hillsboro morning for Learning in Retirement at Tabor College and dinner out. Peggy Goertzen presented the Tabor program about Dr. Charles Flippin, an African-American doctor who practiced in the Hillsboro area in the 19th Century.

Many residents enjoyed the monthly game night Nov. 6. Carla Hajek, PRIDE chairman, announced plans for the community Christmas party Dec. 4. The event will begin with refreshments at the senior center at 2 p.m., furnished by Tri-County Telephone Association.

There people will be able to purchase tickets for the homes tour, which will replace the parade in this year’s Christmas celebration. Home owners opening their homes for display are Walt and Iona Dietrich, David Mueller, Danny Williams, Leo and Sue Yada, and David and Caterina Rziha. Evening festivities at the hall include a soup supper, visit from Santa Claus, and the usual monthly game night.

Monica Svoboda and Jeanne Rziha took a group of young people Nov. 6 to Wichita for junior high rally at the Church of the Resurrection. Participating youth were Katie Marler, Tyler Bentz, Max Svoboda, Mary Leihy, and Lily Benda.

Leona Kleiber and Lucille Kerbs were among those attending the Knights of Columbus breakfast Nov. 6.

Bev Reid of Marion, Jennifer Jay of Hillsboro, and Edna Backhus went Nov. 6 to McPherson for Christmas open houses at a number of businesses.

Delores Riggs of Wichita and Edna Mueller were Nov. 4 and Nov. 6 visitors of Adeline Bernhardt. Leona Kleiber visited her sister Nov. 6. Additional evening visitors were Don Witt and Donna Bundy. Lucille Kerbs visited Adeline on Nov. 3.

Gary and Carole Spohn and Georgia Spohn met Ryan and Jamie Spohn and Luke On Nov. 5 in Manhattan Nov. 5 for dinner out.

Women of Saint John’s Lutheran Church and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ramona met Nov. 3 to work on the plastic sleeping mats they are making for distribution to people in various parts of the world who need them. Jenny Riebhoff from the Lyons Creek Church, who is warehouse manager of the Orphan Grain Train, was present to give the group information about that organization and to provide guidance in construction of the mats. These articles are crocheted from plastic grocery bags.

The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League met Nov. 2 at the church with Leona Kleiber as hostess. Pastor Clark Davis led the lesson, and Joyce Medley gave devotions. Others present were Edna Backhus, Kathy Davis, and Betty Mueller. The following officers were re-eleccted to continue serving in 2012: Kathy Davis and Cindy Benta, co-presidents; Betty Mueller, secretary; and Janet Bielefeld, treasurer.
